The Spokane, Washington Area

Spokane sits on the East side of Washington; along the Spokane River.  It is the 2nd largest city in the state.  The area was first settled by the Spokane tribe who’ survival depended on game hunting and gathering.  In the early 1800’s, two European fur trappers from the Northwest Fur Company encountered the natives for the first time.  Believing they were sacred, the Spokanes helped them prepare for the winter in the Colville River valley.

The North West Company, which merged into the Hundson’s Bay Company in 1821, was the supplier of fur trade between the Rocky and Cascade Mountains between the period of 1810 to 1826.  After this time, the primary operations were moved to Fort Colville, taking much of the focus off of the Spokane post.

The U.S. Army base, Fort Spokane was established in 1880 to protect the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway and U.S. settlement efforts.  More settlers came with the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1881.  The city was then incorporated with the name Spokan Falls.  It was during this time many religious institutions emerged.  The very first church was built by reverend Eells.  The first Baptist, Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches were built between 1881 and 1883.  The discovery of gold and silver inland, helped sustain the economy with mining.  Work was also available in the Timber and agriculture industries up until the late 1980’s.  After fire destroyed the commercial district, the town was rebuilt and incorporated under its present name, Spokane in 1891.
